DRC Sponsored Training

Andy Rickell, Chief Executive, BCODP

The National Council wish to make it clear that the “disability” training being encouraged and supported by the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) is in respect of the Disability Discrimination Act.

Apparently this training is provided at a cost. It must be done in order to be accredited to use the training materials that are provided with it. Its purpose is to enable people to be trained in the responsibilities arising from the DDA. In the words of the DRC “most” of the trainers will be disabled people.

IT IS NOT DISABILITY EQUALITY TRAINING and it should not be marketed as such. Please let us know of any instance where this happens. DET trainers may use the DRC’s training materials as part of their training package if they feel it is appropriate.

The ownership of Disability Equality Training is a fundamental issue for the Movement, and must be owned and regulated by the Movement. Through the DET project that BCODP is undertaking we will ensure that that is the case. It is in all our interests as disabled people seeking full civil rights that we retain the intellectual rights to the Social Model of Disability and the training arising from it.
