Despite the Disability Discrimination and other several Community Care laws, still in 2007 Disabled people do not have the same range of choices non disabled people have when deciding to live independently away from their families. Currently Disabled People have no legal rights to live independently or having the same degree of control which non disabled people have over their own lives. Social Services departments can force disabled people against their wishes into institutionised care homes. Whilst direct payments and individualised budgets assist, there is no requirement in law for social services departments to provide an appropriate level of support so that disabled people have a full life rather than barely exist.
UKDPC is supporting the National Centre for Independent Living as members of the Our Lives Our Choices campaign which is campaigning for Disabled Peoples rights to independent living. Centre to the campaign is Disabled Persons [Independent Living] bill 2006 which imposes a range of legal duties on Public bodies (eg Government and local authorities) to provide adequate independent living support including accessible housing options and adaptations and equipment for disabled people.
