The Communities and Local Government Department have published their proposal of a Single Equalities Bill which is under consultation for three months, closing date on Monday, 4th September. The proposed bill will seek to streamline anti-discrimination legislation covering the 6 equalities strands, disability, race and religious belief, age, sexual orientation and gender. UKDPC views the proposals as an attack on disabled peoples’ rights under a guise of simplifying the legislation which we are campaigning against. In particular, disabled people are against the continuing approach by anti-discrimination legislation which is its failure to level the playing field so that disabled and non disabled people have equal rights and afforded the same degree of dignity and respect for their personal autonomy. We are seeking the retaining of the hard thought rights that disabled people have won in the Disability Discrimination Acts together with improvements in order for disabled people to have true equality.
UKDPC have worked in partnership with the Alliance for Inclusive Education and National Centre for Independent Living to produce a joint response to the Government’s Single Equalities Bill’s proposals.

UKDPC are pleased that the Government
has agreed to rethink its plans for a Single Equalities Bill. This is in response to a large number of
responses confirming our concerns, that this bill was nothing more than an
attack on everyone’s rights. We expect
the Government will try again by possibly publishing a draft Single Equalities
Bill.
