Voters Wanted For The United Kingdom Disabled People's Parliament

Disabled people across the UK are being invited to vote for the first ever Disabled People's Parliament, and to consider standing as candidates for election.

If you would like to find out more about the United Kingdom Disabled People's Parliament project take a look at the United Kingdom Disabled People's Business Plan which is available to download.

All 8.6 million disabled people in the UK can register to vote for the Parliament by contacting the The United Kingdom's Disabled People's Council  (UKDPC) who are organising the first elections this summer.

The Parliament, which will be made up of 180 MDPP's (Member of the Disabled People's Parliament), will have its first meeting on the 3-5 October 2003 at the Jury's Inn, Broad Street, Birmingham.

Andy Rickell, Chief Executive of UKDPC said 'Disabled people who want to vote or stand for election to the Parliament need to contact UKDPC by the beginning of June. People can phone, fax, email.'

We need to know your name, address with postcode, phone, fax and email details. You will also need to be a member of a group or groups run by disabled people.

Would you like to be considered as a candidate for election to the Parliament

To be considered as a candidate, you need to be a member of a group run by disabled people that is currently a Full member of UKDPC. If you are not an individual member of such a group yet, we can identify one for you. All UKDPC's member groups are run by disabled people, and their details are available by searching the Member Groups Directory. If you are struggling to find one then please contact us and we will help.

The Parliament is based on the Social Model of Disability. The Social Model says that we are disabled people not just because we are impaired but because society treats us badly by the way things are built and designed, the way things are organised, and the attitudes of people towards us, which mean that we get left out, and we as disabled people need to work together to change society so that we are all included.
